My entry into the world of cats began while I was wandering on a quiet road when, from the corner of my eye, I saw a car approaching fast. I quickly, half-cursing, moved myself to the edge of the road. As I caught my breath, I saw, to my horror, a black cat blissfully slowly crossing the road.
As the car approached, I shouted to the cat, “Move!” Unfortunately, this caused the opposite reaction to what I had hoped for: instead of running across, the (silly) cat froze right in the middle of the road. In one of those life-changing decisions, I ran and lifted the dazed cat, making it to the other side of the road, just escaping harm by a whisker.
As I placed the startled cat back onto the road, he said, “Thank you.”
I must have looked stunned and disbelieving, so the cat said, “I am a cat, and yes, you heard me say ‘Thank You’ to you! I owe you at least that, I suppose.”
The black cat, whom we will not name for now, gave me much more than a mere thank you.
